The Final
Â
Former Irish Masters and IBSF World Masters Champion Darren Morgan came through the qualifiers at the South West Snooker Academy to reach the main stages of the Wyldecrest Parks World Seniors Championship in the East of England Showground, Peterborough. After knocking out defending champion Jimmy White in the semi-finals, Morgan found himself 1-0 down in the best of three final against the seven-times World Champion Steve Davis. But Morgan came back strong to win the final two frames including a maximum attempt in the second to win the match and title 2-1 to take home the £18,000 first prize and the trophy.
Many people were tipping Morgan to upset the more established legends and pros at the event and it was clear to see in his first match against Gary Wilkinson that he was going to be difficult to stop. Judging by his performance this weekend many people will be asking the question why doesn't he try and get back on to the main pro tour, but he feels it is too late for him to be starting from scratch once again at the age of 45 (full interview coming soon). Unfortunately I can't see him getting the invite to the Premier League next year like Jimmy did when he won the World Seniors last year but hopefully he will get invites to other tournaments off the back of this win.
Overall it was a fantastic weekend, the tournament was very well organised and the crowds were brilliant, nearly packing out the arena for each match. This event definitely has a permanent place on the calendar and there is definitely a place in the snooker calendar for a few more of these televised seniors events.
Once again congratulations to Darren Morgan, the Wyldecrest Parks World Seniors Champion 2011!
