After team England (World no.1 & 2 Mark Selby & Stuart Bingham) and both the Irish and Northern Irish teams failed to progress to the quarterfinals of the Snooker World Cup in Wuxi, China, it was left to just Scotland and Wales to represent to home nations.
Scotland (John Higgins & Stephen Maguire) had arguably the toughest tie of the round against defending champions China A (Ding Junhui & Xiao Guodong). Scotland got off to a dream start, winning the first three frames with top breaks of 65, 42 & 60 before China A pulled one back with a 65 of their own.
Although China A had the first chance, it was the Scots who prevailed in the scrappier frame to win through to the semfinals, 4-1 winners. They face a tough encounter against India (Aditya Mehta & Pankaj Advani) who themselves impressed in beating Belgium (Luca Brecel & Tomasz Skalski) with top runs of 77 & 73. Continue Reading.
Meanwhile the Welsh pairing of Mark Williams and Michael White started off slowly in their quarterfinal match against the in-form Thailand (Dechawat Poomjaeng & Thepchaiya Un-Nooh), losing the first frame. They recovered in style with runs of 83, 50, 60 and 69 to take the next four frames on the bounce to win comfortably 4-1.
The Welsh team face surprise semifinals Zhou Yuelong & Yan Bingtao who form the China B team. Both players who are both ranked outside the top 64, impressed in their 4-2 victory over Australia (Neil Robertson & Vinnie Calabrese) with top breaks of 63 & 91.Â
