2005 World Champion Shaun Murphy had already had a brilliant season in the PTC events. Winning one, reaching the final of another and the semi of another which was more than enough to make him the leader on the order of merit. But winning the PTC Grand Finals was a great culmination for him and he will be looking to impress at the crucible this year.
At the Helix Theatre in Dublin he beat Ricky Walden 4-2 in the first round then came back from 3-2 behind to beat Stephen Lee 4-3 to reach the semi-finals. In front of a packed crowd he disposed of Matthew Stevens to with breaks of 80 and 63 to set up a tie with Martin Gould. Martin himself was appearing in his first televised ranking event final after coming through his semi-final 4-3 over Mark Selby.
The final itself wasn't of the highest quality but Shaun managed to win a second consecutive match 4-0 with the aid of breaks of 43, 40 and 53. Martin had a few chances but failed to capitalize on them and just wasn't at tthe races tonight. Bit he can be happy with his performance this week and will be one of the names that the the top 16 won't want to be drawn with at the Crucible.
Speaking of the draw we will find out tomorrow morning who will be facing who. With names like Matthew Stevens, Stephen Lee and of course Martin Gould in the hat it will be interesting to see what the final 32 will look like. But once again congratulations to Shaun Murphy and good luck for the rest of the season!
