John Higgins beat recently crowned world no.1 and International Championship winner Judd Trump in his two previous major finals, the 2011 World Championship final and more recently, the Shanghai Masters.Â
For the third final in a row he has beaten the in-form Trump and he did it in style, coming from 2-1 down to beat the popular Bristolian 4-2.
First frame went the way of Trump who came out running with a smooth break of 102. the next three saw less breaks but some decent match snooker from the pair, who went 2-2.Â
In the 5th frame Trump broke down on 49, allowing Higgins to snatch the frame. In the next frame the 23-year-old had the first chance but could only manage a couple of pots, leaving Higgins in to make a 50-odd break, ultimately seeing him through a 4-2 winner.
Since scraping through against Steve Davis 4-3 earlier on in the day, Higgins looked up for the event throughout the day and showed his class after winning another decider (4-3 v Anthony Hamilton) late in the day only to have to almost go straight on to face Trump in the final.
Unfortunately this tournament will be the last professional World Snooker event to be staged at the marvellous South West Snooker Academy. It has been confirmed that this tournament (staged in memory of academy owner Paul Mount's sister) will return along with the Pink Ribbon pro-am in some shape or another.
I for one have enjoyed all the events that I have attended here and I have no doubt that the Academy will remain a hot bed of upcoming snooker talent. I thank Paul, Sarah Mount, Janie Watkins and all the others that work so hard to keep the place so well run and welcoming and I wish them all the best for the future, rebranding the venue as The Capital Venue.
