Brazil Masters - Day 2
The first match of the day was between two English pro's Martin Gould and Ricky Walden. It was expected to be a much closer clash but it was dominated by a strong performance by Ricky who has struggled to find any form in recent months.
Top efforts of 51 and 52 got the stamina man through 4-1 to set up a clash with Shaun Murphy who came through against 45-year-old Brazilian wildcard Sobradinho de Deus 4-0 in the earlier match. Could be a tough battle for Shaun now that Ricky is playing better.
Stephen Hendry started his match off with wildcard and Brazilian world cup player Noel Rodrigues slowly with the Brazilian taking a scrappy first frame with a top run of 44 but Hendry stormed back and took the next three frames with top runs of 60 and 54.
In the fifth frame, Hendry drilled in a long red and got perfect on the black and went on to pot 14 reds and 14 blacks. He had a tricky red in to the middle and was unable to get decent position on the black after and jarred it, but it shows that when he is in the balls he is still a force to be reckoned with.
He just needs to sort out his long game to compete with the top players at the moment as most of the time his long pot success is around only 1 in 4. But take nothing away from Hendry, he is through to the quarter-finals to face Ali Carter.
The Captain came through 4-2 against legend Steve Davis in an amusing clash which lasted late in to the night. Steve was looking strong at the start, winning the first frame but he failed to capitalize on his opponent's slow start as Ali came through 4-2 against Steve with top breaks of 70 and 65.
One thing to note today was that the crowds were much improved, with some of the lower tiers even being completely sold out. Must just take star names to bring the people in to the arena, just a shame that we have none of our recent world champions here.
Day 1 Results;
Shaun Murphy 4-0 Sobradinho de Dues
Ricky Walden 4-1 Martin Gould
Stephen Hendry 4-1 Noel Rodrigues
