Six-times world champion Steve Davis played some of his best snooker of the year to win three matches in Ravenscraig to progress to the last 16 of the tournament on Sunday.

After a 4-1 win over Sam Harvey he fought from 2-0 down with four frames in a row to dispatch Liam Highfield 4-2. Then against crowd favourite Stephen Maguire he recovered from 1-0 down to win 4-2 with a 76 break in the final frame.

55-year-old Davis will face Ding Junhui in the next round tomorrow morning after the Chinese no.1 made five century breaks in winning his three matches, which included 103 & 139 in the last two frames to beat Mark Williams 4-3 and a 138 to see off Dominic Dale 4-1 in his last match.

Ken Doherty, through to the last 16

Also through is another multiple event winner & world champion, Ken Doherty. The Irishman will join fellow BBC commentator Davis in the last 16 tomorrow after recorded wins against Michael Wild (4-3), Joe Swail (4-1) and surprise UK Championship quarter-finalist Luca Brecel (4-1).

Doherty will face Ryan Day who beat Jordan Brown in the third round 4-2. Amateur player Brown himself was impressive to see off Scotland's John Higgins 4-3 in the first round to the despair of the watching home crowd.

Amongst those also through to Sunday included English amateur Gary Wilson who looked in great form to dispatch veteran Dave Harold 4-0 in the third round. Ian Burns, Liang Wenbo & Mark Joyce are the other three through to the last day of action.
